A Visit to Shimla

[Continued from Visit to Agra] We boarded the 12011 New Delhi-Kalka Shatabdi Express at 07:40 am from New Delhi railway station and reached Kalka at 11:45 am. From there we boarded the Himalayan Queen Express which is a toy train. It departed from Kalka at 12:10 pm. It was a thrilling journey as the train chugged through narrow tunnels, breathtaking bridges and panoramic green valleys. It was beautiful, truly beautiful. We reached Shimla at around 6 o' clock in the evening. We booked a room at a Hotel Moon Palace. The hotel is located near the Mall, the centre of the town. After settling all the luggage in the room we set out to have a first glimpse of the city. After roaming for sometime we entered a restaurant to have lunch. The food was quite good and the price was also reasonable. After that we came back to our hotel and crawled straight into the bed.

The next day we woke up quite early in the morning. Our first destination was the Himalayan Bird Park. This park is also known as the Himalayan Aviary. It hosts a collection of rare bird species. We saw peafowl, pheasants, Himalayan Monal and many other birds. After that we went to see the Viceregal Lodge. This building was located nearby the Bird Park. So we had no trouble reaching it by walking. This lodge was built in the year 1888 as residence of Viceroy Lord Dufferin. This lodge now houses the Indian Institute of Advanced Study. We saw the architectural magnificence of the building. The garden and entrance hall made us impressed. Then we came back to the Mall and had lunch there. Then we went back to our hotel. In the evening we strolled at the nearby Lakkar bazar. There were many shops in the market. Most of them were selling woolens and carpets. Others were selling wooden toys, handicrafts and other decorative items. We did some shopping there.

The day after we went to visit the Himachal State Museum. This museum has a good collection of coins, photographs, local handicrafts and other items. There was also a doll gallery where we saw some tribal dolls. We also saw some old and damaged sculptures. Altogether this museum is worth a visit. Then we took a taxi and headed towards the Jakhu Temple. This temple is dedicated to Lord Hanuman and is situated on the highest peak of Shimla. After going halfway we had to disembark from the cab and walk the rest of the way to the temple. At the temple we were met by a band of monkeys. They were roaming here and there in search of food from tourists. We hired a stick from the temple entrance in order to keep the monkeys away from us. After staying there for some time we headed back towards the mall where our hotel was situated. In the evening we boarded the Shivalik Deluxe Express from Shimla railway station in order to reach Kalka. The train departed at 05:40 pm and reached Kalka at around 22:25 pm. From there we boarded the Kalka Mail which departed at 23:55 hrs and reached Howrah at around 9 o' clock.
